A LETTER TO THE INDIVIDUAL WHO TOOK OUR TRAIL CAMERA
March 27, 2015
To the individual who took our trail camera,
We are 5th grade scientists in Ms. Watts’ classroom at Gastineau Community School in Douglas. Our classroom has been working on an important field study since the beginning of the school year. Through the use of trail cameras and observations during our field site visits, we have been gathering data to see what kinds of wildlife are using the areas around our school.
This past week, on our most recent field survey, we were saddened to discover that one of our trail cameras was gone… Someone had chopped down the tree it was secured to and had taken our camera. Even worse, more than two months of data had been taken, too.
Here are just a few of the many reasons this study and our missing trail camera are important to us:
We experienced many different emotions after discovering that our camera was gone. Some of us were angry, many of us were confused, but most of us were just sad that you had decided to take something that did not belong to you:
We wanted to share this with you, so that you might understand how your actions have affected our classroom and our learning experiences. We want you to know that we understand that people sometimes make poor choices and we believe in second chances. We would love to have our trail camera and our data returned to us, no questions asked. You could drop it off or send it anonymously through the mail to Gastineau Community School.
Signed,
The Scientists in Ms. Watts’ 5th Grade Classroom
- This study is important to our classroom and our school. It lets us have a unique view of nature, which we cannot see in other ways.
- The camera and our study is important because we wanted to share it, so that everyone would know about all of the amazing wildlife who live around our school.
- This camera was really important to everyone in our class. We are doing real research, like real scientists do, and now we have to put it on pause.
We experienced many different emotions after discovering that our camera was gone. Some of us were angry, many of us were confused, but most of us were just sad that you had decided to take something that did not belong to you:
- It made us all sad because we had more than two months of data on the camera. We intended to present our data to the rest of the school… But because of our missing camera, we cannot continue with our study there. It affects so many people.
- It made us feel pretty upset. We all are very sad and feel very badly that we can’t finish what we have started. We have worked really hard on our field study.
- We just want to be able to continue our field study. We are helping people understand so much more about where we live. It is worth so much more to us than money. We hope that you can find it in your heart to give it back.
